- 1). Place your walking stick into the steamer box. Steamer boxes are simple boxes that are sealed around the seams, with two small holes in the bottom, one to allow steam in, the other to allow excess moisture out. These are often made of Plexiglass and should be only slightly larger than the piece of wood you wish to steam. Heated steam inside the box will penetrate and soften the wood, making it pliable and less likely to crack when bent.
- 2). Boil some water in your kettle and place the spout up to one of the two holes in the bottom of the box. Allow the kettle to boil for about 30 minutes to fill and saturate the box with steam. Ensure there is a suitable amount of water in the kettle for this period of time.
- 3). Remove your softened walking stick from the steamer box and clamp it to a fixed surface using a number of adjustable clamps. Wood bending must be done in slight amounts at a time, do not try to overbend or force the wood into a form into which it does not easily bend.
- 4). Allow for the stick to thoroughly dry out over the course of a week before removing the clamps. The wood will have retained the shape into which it was clamped. If further bending is required, repeat the process of steaming and clamping.
