You can't say there's such a thing as a typical football season, but the 2009-2010 campaign was definitely one of the most exciting in recent years. Even from the get-go, there were dozens of stories on everyone's mind: the Favre Drama and how it would unfold; the Vick Drama and what would go down in Philly; and the return of Tom Brady were among the biggest. As the season went on, each of these stories played out to a satisfying conclusion in one way or another, but there was so much happening simultaneously in other cities around the country. For the satellite TV subscriber who was hooked up with an NFL Sunday Ticket package, there were really five big things that everyone learned as the HD broadcasts came streaming through every week.
1. Favre is beyond far from being done. Brett Favre made such an impact this year that it is almost impossible to overstate. The Vikings looked like the best team on the field week after week, and the commander at the line of scrimmage was completely in character every game they played. Could anyone have seen this coming? Obviously, Vikings management saw it in one their better dreams.
2. The critics of the Colts are running out of ammunition. Doesn't it seem like a short time ago everyone was talking about how the flimsy defense of the Colts would end up being their undoing? At this point, you have to wonder if anyone in the sports world is buying it. Good teams adapt on a weekly basis, and if the Colts met their match more than once the entire season, there would be a lot of interest in finding out who that was.
3. It's finally not easy being Tom Brady. For the longest time, Tom Brady was the George Clooney of football. He had the stunning girlfriend/wife, ran the show whenever he went to work and rarely had anything less than an amazing cast behind him. The season he came back from his injury was not an entirely smooth one for the Patriots' leading man. How the mighty can sometimes stumble.
4. The distraction of Michael Vick is nothing to consider for very long. Vick came back in an extremely muted role and everyone saw the end of the controversy after a number of weeks. At the end of the day, he's a football player no longer in his prime, shrouded by doubts and suspicion, playing for a team who doesn't necessarily need him. In some ways, that is an even further tumble from his best playing days.
5. Without the big package, you're going to miss a ton of football. The New Orleans Saints were in many ways the biggest story of the season. Matching the Colts on their 14-0 opening run, Drew Brees and company were on point from the word 'go.' Unless you were rolling with NFL Sunday Ticket, you probably had to settle for highlights.
