DIY College Crafts: Supplies for a Glass Ball Ornament
Want to commemorate your college kid's first year with a DIY glass ball ornament? Here's what you'll need to make this Christmas craft project.
- Clear glass ball ornaments from the craft store
- Campus logo, mascot or graduation images
- Vellum or other not-too-heavy paper
- Fake snow or sprinkles
- Scissors or an X-acto knife
- A pencil or chopstick
Here's how to do it ...
Here's how to make this glass ball ornament:
- Carefully pop the tops off the glass ornaments. The easiest way to do this is by squeezing the little wire loop on top, which will loosen the fitting. (Simply yanking the fitting risks breaking the ball.)
- Pick a colorful image - a rounded image works better than square or rectangular because of the ball's curvature. Print the image(s) out. These look great printed on vellum or translucent paper - and you won't have to trim the image as precisely. But regular copy paper works fine too. Card stock will be too stiff for easy handling.
- Using an X-acto knife or scissors, trim the image closely. Roll it around a pencil or chopstick and drop it through the ornament opening. Shake the ball to unfurl the image. Use the eraser end of the pencil to rearrange the paper's position. It may flop around but that's ok.

Three more steps!
- Use a funnel to pour multi-colored sprinkles or fake snow into the bottom of the ball. Reposition the image so it stands properly. Add more sprinkles to stabilize it.
- Fit the top back on, squeezing the wires as you insert them.
- Hang on tree.
