- 1). Use the least amount of detergent possible when washing dishes by hand. Soak your dirty pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrub them clean. Also, use one sink or basin for washing and a second basin for rinsing. All of this minimizes rinse water and saves between 50 to 150 gallons of water per month.
- 2). Collect water in the shower while waiting for the hot water to come on, and use it for watering your plants or garden. You can also begin taking shorter showers. If you keep your shower time under five minutes, you will save at least 1,000 gallons of water a month.
- 3). Put a cover on your pool, and you will cut down on the evaporation process. You will also keep your pool cleaner and reduce the need to add chemicals to the water. If you do this, you will save at least a 1,000 gallons of water per month.
- 4). Defrost your meat overnight in the refrigerator or use the defrost setting on your microwave instead of thawing your meat under running hot water. Also, start a compost pile of food debris instead of using the garbage disposal, which is a big water waste.
- 5). Wash full loads of laundry to save water, energy, and time. Research by consumer groups show that people under-fill their clothes washer by 30 percent. With fewer loads, you can save up to 2,000 gallons of water in one year.
