How do you Play Pot Limit Omaha? Part 3 - The Maniac

The maniac can be an irritation to some players in PLO, some may be glad to have such kind of loose character in their table; others act poorly in respond to such attendance. Well, it may sound strange to you but a lot of people don't welcome such reckless character and don't want to involve in an all out raising war against the maniac if they don't have an excellent hand. They even go further in complaining the maniac's presence.

I will mention circumstances below with a specific profile of a maniac in tow. This maniac seems to be the first to raise whenever the hand is dealt and purposively re-raises most of the time. This person just wanted to have the pot once and for all before the flop even hit the table.

Adjusting well into a maniac in PLO should not be done drastically. You should think it through just the same with other poker decisions you comply. You also need to leave all kinds of fixed ideals you know about the person in general. You only need to look at the situation in a lot of different sides at once.

The following are the three most important factors you need to consider when planning to adjust:

- The maniac's position against you
- The reaction and adjustment of other players
- Dealing mentally with large swings

You have better position against the maniac and the players have loosened up

Whenever you're sitting on a maniac's left, you believe that the habitual way to isolate him is to re-raise. But if the others will know what you're up to, they will adjust their play and it will be not good for you. They will start re-potting and you will see yourself folding or in a 3 way all in with little benefits.

Just be vigilant in your isolation efforts especially if all the other players have loosened up. You'll never know that you and the maniac are the ones being isolated until it's too late.

You have better position against the maniac and the table has not loosened up

Provided that the other players don't mind you and the maniac having a head to head encounter then start to re-raise to your heart's content.

Just be guarded of any more player smooth-calling, or re-raising you. This is normally the signs of a powerhouse hand, and they are allowing the maniac do the gambling to suck in further players.

The maniac has better position against you and the table has loosened up

The finest thing to do in this arrangement is to allow the maniac do the betting for you which will add more players to the pot. This is the best case in m y evaluation - though others will dispute that it will be preferable to have position over the maniac to isolate him is best; but for me, it's better to limp and let the maniac raise up the pot, get more callers and then come out on top with a huge raise in order to isolate the maniac with a lot of dead money in the pot.

The maniac has better position against you and the table has not loosened up

Provided that the players has not fine-tuned their play even if the maniac is there then it's time for you to begin the raising and just await that the maniac will re-raise, which of course will with any luck fold all the remaining players. And if you have a powerful hand then you can push the raising further or you can take a flop with enough money left.

As a rule, I keep my raises and re-raise lesser on Pot Limit Omaha games - I don't want to be in the situation of a betting war against a maniac without a powerhouse hand. It's better for me to help build a better pot as we go post flop and I wouldn't be regretting my decisions even if I have to let go of the hand.

A fine case would be playing in a PLO game with stakes of $2/$4 with a buy-in of $400. The normal raise in this stake would be $14 but I would usually bet between $8 and $10 or will just simply re-raise using the lowest amount in order for me not to gamble a lot of my chips before the flop are shown.

Whenever the maniac opens with $14, re-raise it to $28 - this move can give you a respite to fold your hand when a locksmith re-raise after you. You can also call the maniac's 3-bet which would be $90 heads-up or $118 with another caller in tow. With this, you'll be left approximately $300 - then you can re-raise it to $276 and then to $300 - effectively making the push.

However if you re-pot the maniac first bet making it $48, then you would be gambling more than 10% of your chips. If a locksmith re-raises you then it you need to fold and if you're calling the maniac's 3-bet resulting to $150 - it will be a big deduction to your chips.

There are actually a lot of ways to discourage the maniac when he or she comes in your table doing his loose behavior. But the examples mentioned above are just cannon ways to thwart his or her progress. They are multiple ways to bring them down but you need to adjust your play strategically for each of them because there are a lot of stages into a being a maniac and you can't let them fool you with their ways.
