- 1). Use only 1-K grade kerosene in your heater. Turn off your heater and take it outside to fill it. Never move your kerosene heater when it is turned on. The heater should be cool to the touch before filling it; and always be sure to fill it away from combustible items.
- 2). Keep a door or window open one inch when running the heater to prevent exposure to toxic fumes. You must ensure that your room has proper ventilation when operating your kerosene heater.
- 3). Raise the wick in the kerosene heater to the level recommended by the manufacturer. Trim any frayed pieces off the wick with a pair of scissors to prevent the wick from smoking.
- 4). Install a smoke detector in any room where you use the kerosene heater, and also near bedroom areas.
- 5). Watch for flareups from your kerosene heater. If this occurs, leave your home and call the fire department.
