- 1). Go to your local home and garden store or hardware store to purchase fire extinguishers and smoke detectors if you don't have them already. In addition, purchase a few extra batteries for your smoke detectors so that you can change them as the batteries wear down.
- 2). Place a fire extinguisher in your kitchen near the stove to have quick access in the event of a fire while cooking. A good place to store the fire extinguisher is in a visible location near the stove, or underneath your countertop in a cabinet. You can also choose to mount it on the wall in your kitchen.
- 3). Place smoke detectors in every room of the house above the door frame. This is your best defense against a fire; it will alert you when smoke is present in the home. Ensure that you test the detectors once a month to ensure that they're working appropriately.
- 4). Put together a safety or "bug out" bag in the event of a fire or other emergency, and keep it in a convenient, easily accessible location near a main entrance to the home. The bag should consist of a first aid kit, flashlight and batteries, any medications you may need, change of clothes and a small amount of cash.
