- Over-the-counter pain relievers can go a long way in treating an ear ache, especially in young children. Look for anti-inflammatory medicines, such as ones that contain the ingredient Ibuprofen, to help relieve the swelling and bring about comfort. These can really help kids who need to sleep but are having trouble doing so because of the pain.
- Heating pads can be used to help relieve the discomfort of an ear ache. Plug one in and put it on the affected ear gently. Be careful with a child so that it does not get too hot. For those who don't have a heating pad available, a warm compress can be made from a small towel or washcloth. Wet it, wring out the excess water, heat carefully in a microwave until it becomes very warm and lay it against the ear that aches for relief.
- For an ear ache that is severe, a doctor may prescribe ear drops. These pain-relieving drops can greatly help an ear ache for many. Make sure to get a doctor's approval before using ear drops in a young child's ear, especially for a child that has tubes in their ears. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to get rid of any infection that is causing an ear ache to occur.
- Mineral oil can be bought in almost any store and is a cheap and effective way to relive an ear ache. Simply warm up a small amount of the mineral oil to room temperature and slowly add a couple of drops of it into the ear that hurts. Lie down and let the oil sit in the ear for around 10 to 15 minutes, drain and carefully rinse with water. The warm oil will help relieve the pain of an ear ache.
