Learning Spanish and a Personal Commitment

Some people who come to me asking for advise on Spanish language learning, complain about their teacher, or Spanish school.
They believe that they are not improving their Spanish as quickly as they expected.
When I ask them how committed they are to their Spanish language learning process, that is, what action do they take to improve their Spanish language skills, quite a few of them reply that they go to class whenever their work or personal life allows them to do so.
Then, I ask them to name their priorities in life, and where learning Spanish stands.
Spanish doesn't seem to score high on the rank.
Our lack of commitment in any activity we undertake, or objective we pursue, will result in failure.
Why we lack commitment and how to change our predicament.
We all know that going to the gym, or practicing sport is good for us, eating a healthy diet, making time for ourselves...
Still, far too often, we hardly visit the sport center, our fancy book on dieting gets lost in our shelves, and our long lost hobby, still remains lost.
Since I'm in the same boat as you are, I've thought about it very thoroughly, so that I can first understand myself, and help my students and you to make the most of your Spanish learning experience.
Dieting and language learning For years I've been dieting.
Well, first thing in the morning, by lunch time I've given up.
You may be wondering what has dieting got to do in language learning.
I'll tell you: commitment, or should I say lack of it.
And why is it that some of us lack commitment when it comes to certain issues? Because it involves an effort to get what we want, and we haven't thought carefully about the benefits we'll gain.
I recently made a list with ALL the positive benefits I would get by dieting, and it has actually worked wonders.
By writing down every single benefit I'll enjoy, it makes it now much easier for me to accept the effort that dieting involves.
So what I would like you to do now is to stop and think why you're studying Spanish? Make a list and name every single benefit you will acquire when you can speak the language.
Only write down what you truly believe is important.
Let me give you a few ideas, you may want to add or delete a few points.
Learning Spanish will help me: - Get a better job.
- Get more customers.
- Gain more confidence when socializing with Spaniard.
- Be able to communicate with the parents of my children's friends - Feel part of the community - Get to know a new culture...
Now, think about the effort you are prepared to make: - How many hours you will be attending your Spanish class for.
- How many hours you'll be studying at home.
- How many days a week will you be doing revision and how long for.
- How often will you be practicing your Spanish and who with...
Finally, you have to decide whether the benefits will pay off, and also see if now is the right time for you to learn Spanish.
If that is the case, if you want to commit yourself to learning Spanish, then -if you haven't join my list yet - I'd like to invite you sign in, and get FREE tips on Spanish language learning.
Come along, I'll be more than happy to help you! Hasta pronto, Nuria Your Spanish Language Coach
