Treatments For Mesothelioma Cancer

There are various treatments for Mesothelioma.
The most common treatments are: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Also experimental treatments are being widely used.
These types of treatments include: gene therapy and immunology.
The treatment that is used depends on the stage and location of the cancer.
Mesothelioma is known to be an aggressive disease and is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage when it is no longer possible to surgically remove the cancer and unfortunately for many people a cure is not possible.
Surgery is the most common treatment.
It is used to remove early-stage Mesothelioma.
It is not always possible to remove all of the cancer, if this occurs surgery can be used to lessen the symptoms and to keep Mesothelioma from spreading.
Chemotherapy is widely used in treating mesothelioma.
It can be injected or taken in pill form.
Most of the chemo drugs are given intravenously.
It does not cure the cancer but it works by traveling though the body and killing cancerous cells with chemicals.
The drugs used are administered in two ways into the chest cavity or into the abdominal cavity.
Chemotherapy is known to be effective but there are side effects, which may be very unpleasant.
Another treatment is radiation.
Radiation kills Mesothelioma cancer cells and helps to lessen the spreading of cancer.
This is typically recommended when a patient is too weak for surgery or chemotherapy.
Radiation is often used along with surgery.
Radiation is easier for patients to bear than chemotherapy and has fewer side effects.
It is considered to be a short-term treatment.
Immunotherapy is an experimental treatment.
It utilizes the patient's immune system and "tricks" it into helping kill cancer cells.
There are two principle types of immunotherapy: active and passive.
Active immunotherapy removes mesothelioma cancer cells from the patient and is then turned into a vaccine.
Passive immunotherapy helps to boost the patient's immune system and helps it respond better to the cancer.
Gene therapy is another experimental treatment, which uses genetic substances to pinpoint cancer cells and make them defenseless against chemotherapy.
Alternative treatments are also used.
They include the taking of vitamins or herbs and using other remedies like massage therapy or acupuncture and even hypnosis.
There are many treatments available for mesothelioma.
Those suffering from the disease should work with their healthcare professionals to determine which treatment will work best for them.
