- 1). Ask students what they want from a student council representative. For instance, ask students to name the qualities most important to them when they vote for a candidate. Also, ask students what goals or initiatives they would like to see the student council undertake. Address students from diverse groups and cliques. In addition, address students from different academic programs, as the initiatives of a fashion student might be different from the initiatives of a fine arts or industrial design student.
- 2). Draft a speech that responds to the specific concerns and desires of student voters. For instance, express that you have the qualities and characteristics (e.g. honesty or dedication) that they desire in a leader and that you vow, if elected, to tackle the issues that matter to them. Be specific, rather than broad, about what you plan to accomplish.
- 3). Plan to incorporate media or other visual aids to make the speech more dynamic. DASH students, no matter their program of study, are creative and visually oriented people. To catch their attention, use media such asPower Point with sound and pictures.
- 4). Practice your speech to make sure it conforms to time requirements. Rehearse in front of friends or family for feedback on the content and delivery. Revise the speech as necessary.
