Board members, management, staff, teachers, parents and friends of Centro Mater gathered to celebrate the opening and inauguration of the 5th Child care center dedicated to caring for children and helping their families in Miami Dade.
Located in the heart of Little Havana, CentroMater Pepe and Lucila Ortega Center will educate, protect and nourish 80 low-income children ages 3 - 5 years old, with a staff of 8 teachers and two case managers. This new Child Care facility will provide parents the opportunity to work, knowing their children are being cared for and educated in a safe, loving and nurturing environment.
The center has been named in honor of Pepe and Lucila Ortega, two pillars on which Centro Maters progress has been built. Their love and commitment exemplifies the true meaning of altruism. For more than four decades Pepe and Lucila Ortega have fueled Centro Maters growth, without any desire for public recognition. This honor is well deserved and long overdue. Pepe and Lucila Ortega truly are a source of motivation and Inspiration for CentroMater.
Although Pepe Ortega, founder of Sazon Goya Food Company, a well known businessman, community leader and philanthropist, recently passed away, his lovely wife Lucila was there to cut the ribbon and celebrate this much anticipated moment. Pepe will be remembered fondly as a philanthropist thanks to his generous donations to the League against Cancer, Jose Marti scholarships, Centro Mater Foundation, and Mercy Hospital.
Among those with something special to share about the history, the mission and the special gifts of Centro Mater were Ana Ortega, president and Isabel de Quesada, vice president of the Centro Mater Foundation. This experience gives us a unique inside vision to get pre-school children ready for school. The centers create a safe, nurturing environment that allows children to be problem-solvers, independent explorers and creative thinkers.
