The title of this might surprise you, but it's true.
A large percentage of pink stun guns and other girly self defense items are sold to men.
Is this a new trend among macho men, as in 'real men wear pink'? No, it isn't.
So why are tough guys buying bedazzled pepper spray? Because 'real men' love their women.
Part of loving someone means you will do all you can to protect them.
Have you ever witnessed a 6 year old boy 'save' his mom from a big, huge, hairy, 12 legged spider? (Maybe I exaggerated just a little, but not much!) They become a hero and gain a little extra gleam in their eyes.
Could mom have killed the beasts herself? Yes, of course.
But most little boys are born with the instinct to protect their loved ones.
Unless this instinct is extinguished, these boys grow up to be men who will do whatever they can to protect the ladies in their lives.
I am not suggesting that women are helpless.
Part of being strong is recognizing and acknowledging your weaknesses.
Even women who are trained in self defense tactics are not invincible.
Most women will never have the same upper body strength than the average man does.
So you have to rely on other methods to protect yourself.
This is why women should have a self defense weapon available to them.
This is also the reason men buy them for their wives, girlfriends, and daughters.
All too often, I see a guy who wants to buy a pepper spray or a stun gun for his gal.
He understands the need for her to have a way to defend herself when he is not around.
And the lady will say "No, I don't need that.
" The same women will then go down the aisle and spend twice as much on a purse.
I watch as the man stands by sheepishly.
She has rejected his attempt to protect her.
This is a small way that the protective instinct is extinguished.
He wants to protect her, but he also wants her to be happy.
On the other hand, there are guys that say, "I don't want my wife to have that.
She might use it on me.
" It can make you wonder what underlying problems there might be in that relationship.
Ultimately, the responsibility to protect yourself is your alone.
Even if you are married to the strongest man in the world, or you dad is an expert shooter, chances are, there are times you are by yourself.
