Choosing The Right Gun Safe For You

While your firearms may be a source of great pride, enjoyment and protection, they can also be a threat to your family.  Accidental shootings have been in the headlines regularly, for decades.  It's all too easy for a child to find a gun and pull the trigger, harming themselves or another accidentally.  If you choose to keep firearms in your home, a gun safe is a tremendous choice and can help ensure that your family remains safe and sound.  What should you look for in a gun safe?

Gun safes come in all different shapes and sizes.  You'll find tall cabinet safes designed to hold rifles and shotguns, as well as smaller safes designed to hold a range of handguns.  You will also find combination safes, designed to hold both rifles and handguns securely.  Therefore, your obvious first step is to determine what type of gun safe you want.  Do you have a large collection of rifles?  Perhaps you only own a single handgun.  Regardless, you will find a gun safe to fit your needs.

You will also need to decide if you need a cabinet, a vault (such as a wall vault), a top-draw safe or something else.  You will discover that gun safes come in a tremendous variety, offering you a wide range of choices.  Your choice of gun safe will not only hinge on the type of guns that you own, but also on how you prefer to remove them from the safe and the amount of space you have available in your home, in which to place the safe.

One advent of modern technology is the electronic wall vault.  These vaults are secured electronically and you access them with a security code (that you create). The single largest benefit of this type of gun safe is that you never need to worry about losing the key, or that someone might pick the lock.  Other lock options include combination locks, key locks, programmable digital locks and many other options.  Remember, you'll need to choose a sturdy locking system to ensure protection, as well as easy access when you need to remove your guns.

Finally, you should choose a gun safe that will give you room to grow.  Few gun owners are content to own only a single firearm - purchase a safe that lets you add to your collection and you will be more satisfied with your purchase.
