Spanish verb conjugation is without a shadow of a doubt, the most difficult part of learning Spanish. The fact that most of the verbs you will use regularly are irregular verbs just compounds the problem as it makes it even more difficult to reach the point where you can hold down a half-decent conversation. To put it simply, if you want to speak Spanish you have to know and understand how to conjugate and use Spanish verbs.
Learning verb conjugations has always been tedious; hours of mind-numbingly boring repetition until you eventually reach a point where you are dreaming in your sleep about conjugation. This method of learning Spanish verbs and their various conjugations is unpleasant, un-enjoyable and time-consuming, but until relatively recently, it was the only way to learn them, hence why there were far more students who started to learn Spanish than were actually finishing.
When you put it into perspective, learning verbs, is a massive task. There are three groups of regular verbs which, by the way, are pretty easy to master, each of these groups consists of thousands of different verbs. However, the real problem is with learning the many irregular verbs, of which there are well over two thousand, and many of those verbs are amongst the most regularly used verbs in everyday speech.
Although learning two thousand irregular verbs seems an almost impossible mountain to climb, many of these are quite obscure and will rarely be used and are therefore verbs you should, and will, pick up as you start to use the language more frequently but, there still remains a core of about fifty, very difficult verbs, that need to be learned to be able to master conversational Spanish and it is these verbs that consistently cause the most difficulty for students.
The proverbial 'knight in shining armour' of this tale has been the successful introduction of the home computer and the internet, in particular Spanish verb training software. The most recent programs not only drastically increase the speed at which the most difficult verbs are learned but they also provide a huge amount of enjoyment whilst studying which means that memorization of difficult conjugations is vastly improved.
In short, if you are serious about learning Spanish you should understand how important learning verb conjugations is, and therefore, you should also understand that a tool such as a verb training program is no longer a luxury and is instead an absolute necessity if you want to learn Spanish successfully and in the shortest time possible!
