Safely Installing Appliances in New Cabinets

Many of the more challenging tasks when installing cabinets may have nothing to do with the cabinets.
It is common to incorporate sinks, stoves, ovens, sinks, and dishwashers into new cabinet design.
In addition, if the cabinets are being installed in new locations (as opposed to just replacing existing cabinets) advanced construction efforts may be required to level and sure up the new location.
These projects will create a host of additional requirements, with safety not the least of them.
The regulations addressing electricity are extensive, and if doing more than simply replacing an existing appliance into a pre-existing line, it may be appropriate to bring in an experienced electrician.
You must also be familiar with the local building codes and permit requirements that will come into play.
Many localities require any changes in electrical lines to have a separate electrical permit in addition to the normal building permit that is required.
In any case, it is wise to meet with the local construction code official and walk them through the entire project to make sure that there are no unpleasant surprises for you or the homeowner once the project is complete.
Tapping into a water line has similar precautions.
It is vital to insure that the existing water pressure and diameter of the feed line is adequate to support the maximum draw that is intended.
Waste lines tend to be easier to add on to, but they too must be inspected prior to altering the original design.
Many of these issues become amplified if you are working in an older home.
If the existing system is from the original construction, it may no longer be up to code and could require substantial upgrades prior to attaching the new appliances.
Situations like this may further justify the need to bring professionals with special skills and licenses.
You must be prepared to respond to some homeowners that will ask you to save them some effort by ignoring the permits or by just using the existing service lines regardless of their condition.
This is not only dangerous, it can lead to large liability issues that may or may not be covered by your insurance.
In order to maintain your reputation and your integrity, be prepared to walk away from projects that you would not be proud to show to other prospective customers.
That little voice that tells you a project will be trouble is worth listening to in the end.
