Reasons to Join the High School National Honor Society

    College Scholarships

    • One of the main reasons for high school students to join the National Honor Society is the scholarship opportunities available. The organization, as of 2010, provides more than $200,000 a year in scholarship money, offering awards such as a Spirit of Community Award to those who excel in community service and a President's Education Award Program to those who outstanding academic achievements. National Honor Society Scholarships give $1,000 to finalists, $1,500 to state winners, $3,000 to regional winners and $1,300 to the national winner. Being awarded a National Honor Society scholarship is also highly respected by most major American colleges and universities.

    Prestige

    • Being a part of the most famous organization for high school scholars carries with it a prestigious accomplishment that will not only look impressive to colleges but also to future employers. The society garners national respect, and because of its selective admission process, membership into the organization entails responsibilities such as maintaining outstanding academic standing, volunteering in the local community and building character. The National Honor Society aims to establish an organization of excellent high school students that not only do well in school but also serve the community. With this comes a plethora of networking opportunities and chances to build relationships. Membership, hence, has a value and recognition that goes well beyond your high school years.

    Leadership Experience

    • Membership into the National Honor Society provides great opportunities to meet other high school scholars and to gain leadership experience. Students can also attend Leadership and Development Conferences and a National Student Leadership Week and gain knowledge, professional development and leadership skills. Students can also start their own service projects. For example, a high school member can organize weekly service trips to a low-income area to help rebuild worn-down housing. These types of experiences are invaluable and give students not only a chance to gain leadership and team-building experience but also a sense of helping the community. The "Leadship for Student Activities" publishes monthly articles and information on high school members' various leadership and service projects.

    Character Growth

    • An intangible benefit of joining the National Honor Society for any high school student is the chance to build character. The society, through its programs, seminars and community service, hopes to teach high school students the values of good citizenship and leadership. Participating in various service projects also allows students to help their local community and grow ethically and morally by understanding the worth that is involved in helping others. Membership, hence, has a personal value that enables high schoolers to gain confidence and grow spiritually.
