ADD and ADHD Disorders - Medication Is Not The Answer!

How do you approach ADD & ADHD disorders? Maybe you are a sceptic and think that the pharmaceutical industry has invented these with a little help from the medical profession in order to make more money.
Or you genuinely believe that it is a mental disorder and has to be properly treated.
You may fall into the third category which blames it all on bad parenting and ADHD children are just hyperactive and naughty.
As usual with such a complex issue as ADD & ADHD disorders, there is a grain of truth in all three attitudes.
The first is that it is now almost universally recognized that ADHD is overdiagnosed and often misdiagnosed.
The second position is nearer the truth with the proviso that medication should be the last option rather than the first.
The third category usually blame it all on the poor parents and are usually those you see glaring in the shopping mall when your kid has a meltdown.
ADHD is not caused by bad parenting but good parenting skills can really go a long way to raising great kids.
If it is done correctly, using a few techniques from a behavior modification program, it can be better than any medication under the sun.
As regards the two acronyms, it is better to point out that very soon, these will not be used if the suggestions for the fifth edition of the DSM are adopted.
The ADD acronym usually reserved for those children who are the predominantly inattentive type, stands for attention deficit disorder.
The ADHD one includes the hyperactivity element and hence the H.
Soon, reference to the ADD & ADHD disorders will be covered just by one acronym which will be AD/HD.
This will cover all three types.
The ADD one will be just AD, while the hyperactive type will be HD.
The combined type will be AD/HD.
Using both the ADD & ADHD disorders acronyms has been confusing and slightly misleading so the new suggestions should clear all that up.
Whatever acronym we used, the fact of the matter is that ADHD can be dealt with successfully provided a behavior modification program is followed.
All the medical authorities recommend this strongly now.
As regards medication, people are becoming more and more wary of the ADHD meds which are nothing more than amphetamines.
