- 1). Contact your state's licensing authority to ask what licenses you'll need to start working as a photographer in your area. Although requirements will vary from state to state, you'll need a business license and may have to apply for a number of local permits. You can use the license and permit search facility on the Small Business Administration website to get an idea of the requirements in your state.
- 2). Register with your local Department of Revenue for sales tax. You should also contact the Internal Revenue Service to request and Employer Identification Number if you plan to employ anybody.
- 3). Apply for permits and memberships specific to the area of photography you're planning to work in. If you're a press photographer, join the National Press Photographers Association. You'll also need to register for press passes for any events you plan to attend in a professional capacity. In some states, press photographers can apply for special car number plates. If you're working with children, you may need to register with your state's licensing authority and undergo a criminal record check.
- 4). Sign-on with a photo agency like Getty Images, Magnum Photos and Corbis Images. You can also register with stock photography websites to sell your work. Make sure you review licensing terms before registering with any photo agency or stock photography website.
