Electrical plug with removable cover
Remove the old plug. Some extension cords have the plug molded onto the cord. If that's the case, cut the plug off with wirecutters. Some plugs have a removable cover. Look at the face of the plug, where the prongs are. If you see two or three screws on the face, unscrew them. Then push back the cover of the plug, unscrew the wires connected to it, and remove the old plug and cover. - 2). Strip the insulation from the leads of the extension cord so that 3/8 to 1/2 inch of bare wire is exposed.

Wiring a plug
Slide the cover of your new extension cord plug onto the wire. Then connect the wires of the cord onto the plug. Some extension cords will have two leads---a black wire and a white wire---while some will have three: black, white and a bare wire. Connect the black wire to the brass-colored screw of the plug, the white wire to the silver, and the bare wire, if you have it, to the green screw. In each case, loosen the screw with your screwdriver, slip the bare end of the wire underneath, and tighten down. - 4). When the leads are connected, tug gently on the cord to make sure the wires are securely fastened. Then slip the cover over the plug and tighten it in place with the screws on the face.
