How to Design a Garden Path for Children

  • 1). Outline the shape and location of the path. Keep it easy to follow but not too predictable. Allow the path to follow its natural direction as much as possible; maintain the curves and out-of-the-way elements such as slopes that are not too steep or a sudden change in direction behind a tree or corner. That will encourage exploration and lessen a formal look.

  • 2). Select a kid-appropriate material, such as gravel, wood chips or plant material, to create a softscape rather than traditional hardscape materials like brick, stone or concrete pavers typically used in formal pathways.

  • 3). Include surprise or unexpected elements along the path, such as a teepee to allow for a quick game of hide and seek. Cover the tent with climbing plants for additional interest.

  • 4). Plant kid-friendly plants, including tall and short sunflowers and lamb's ears, or ornamental grasses such as bunny tails, which produce powder-puff, soft flowers. Incorporate a mix of perennials, annuals and bulbs to have something of interest growing year-round. Incorporate small fruit trees or edible plants such as pansies or violets to encourage munching along the path. Consider including plants such as butterfly weed or herbs like dill to attract butterflies.

  • 5). Find a spot along the path to put a small bench or outdoor stool to encourage kids to sit and watch the birds or insects in the environment, or just to provide a place for a quick rest.

  • 6). Consider placing a simple water feature or statue near the bench, to further stimulate the child's senses of hearing and touch.
