How to Get on MTV"s Real World

MTV's Real World is generally considered to be the original reality show.
In fact, the show is often credited with sparking the trend that started the genre entirely.
The show began as a genuine social experiment, designed to be a fly on the wall expose of young adults from different backgrounds and lifestyles coming together.
In recent seasons, the show has placed more emphasis and screen time on drunken revelry and hookups.
Although viewers and critics will argue over whether the direction that the show has gone in recent years is a positive or a negative, it was perhaps inevitable.
Aside from this, MTV's Real World is a legitimate empire at this point.
The show has been on the air for 25 seasons, far more than any other reality show.
Who wouldn't want to be a part of it all? If you are interested in being a part of this historic show, then you should apply to be on MTV's Real World.
If you do, make sure to follow the instructions on the show's official casting website.
To apply for the show, you must be between the ages of 18 and 24, and you must submit a five minute audition tape.
If you are going to apply, it is good to have some idea of what you can anticipate.
Although it is hard to say exactly what you can expect because everyone's casting experience is different, these guidelines are basic ideas to keep in mind.
Keep it Unscripted This point is an obvious one until you actually sit down to make your casting tape.
You may feel if you are speaking off the cuff that what you have to say is boring.
The best advice here is to simply decide on some exciting facet of your life or personality and begin to talk openly about it.
Certainly, it is a good idea to have some idea of what you are going to talk about on your audition tape.
However, scripting things outright is usually transparent and does not come across nearly as well as you might think.
Don't Play to Type Conventional wisdom says that reality show casting directors, and perhaps particularly those on Real World, are looking for specific types of people.
This is a vague statement that is meant to allude to some specific combination of ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, attitude, or personality.
The only advice here is to just be yourself.
If you are not a "bitchy blonde", then any seasoned casting director will see right through you trying to act like one.
You don't have to play a character, and in fact doing so goes against what the show is about.
It is OK to emphasize parts of your personality that you think would be appealing for the show, but the best way to do this is through an anecdote.
For example, if you have jealousy issues in relationships, instead of simply saying this, give a funny or dramatic example that proves your point.
Be Realistic This should go without saying, but it is easy to get swept up in the excitement of potentially appearing on a hugely popular show.
For the sake of saving yourself from embarrassment, do not tell people that you are going to appear on the show after you submit your audition tape.
What you have actually done is join the casting pool along with thousands of other hopefuls.
Even if you do get one of the initial call backs, your reality stardom is anything but guaranteed.
Make sure to treat the process as fun, and try to take it all with a grain of salt.
Countless people never even get the initial call back, so count yourself lucky if you make it even that far.
Sending an audition tape to a reality show is an exciting activity, particularly when it is one as well supported and historic as MTV's Real World.
I suggest getting a group of your friends together some time when you are bored and taking turns filming each other's audition tapes.
At the very least you will have a few laughs and learn a little about each other, and one of you just might make it on to the actual show.
