Whether the bees are part of a commercial enterprise or the basis of an enthralling rewarding hobby the aim is to produce honey.
Honey will work tirelessly throughout their lives collecting nectar from flowers and creating honey to feed the colony.
As they collect the nectar pollen sticks to them and they pollinate flowers as they travel from plant to plant enabling the plants to convert the flower into fruit.
The fruit contains the seed of the plant thus enabling the spread of the species and provides food for a variety of animals and us humans.
It is the beekeeper job to collect the honey from the bees at the right time and prepare it for human use.
After the honey combs have been removed from the bees the wax caps should be removed.
This wax has been used by the bees to seal the honey in its comb.
The wax should always be saved as this provides a very useful by-product of honey production.
The wax is used for making fragrant candles the basis of furniture polish.
The honey needs to be separated from the comb.
This is normally done in a 'honey extractor' which is a centrifuge that spins the honey from the comb.
The combs can be reused in the hive when required.
Honey is sold in 1 of 4 different ways:- •1 Extracted Honey - this is the honey straight from the extractor sieved and poured into jars.
•2 Comb Honey - this honey as the bees produced it comb and all.
Encouraging the bees to make it in a form that can be sold in this form is not easy.
But there are many cleaver little products on the market to assist you.
•3 Chunk honey - cut the un-extracted comb into 'chunks' and fill the jar pouring over any extracted honey to fill the jar.
•4 Whipped honey - this honey has been processed by heating the honey, sieving it cooling then reheating and finally adding ground crystallised honey (this is known as the Dyce Method, having been developed and patented in 1935 by Elton J Dyce) This produces a smooth spreadable honey that is very slow to crystallize.
Note.
All honey will crystallise particularly when cold therefore should never be refrigerated.
However the process can be reversed be placing the jar in warm water.
Honey can be used many ways in cooking and as a replacement for sugar with many positive health effects.
There are many recipes for dishes that use honey in its own right.
Honey has been used throughout the ages as a medication, there are potions documented by the ancient Egyptians for medical reasons Today it is used as a balm for burns and abrasions, in medications for coughs and colds and hayfever.
It is also used widely as a beauty product - moisturizing, acne treatment and would you believe it hair loss.
It is amazing what uses honey has been put throughout time, but I believe the oddest is as the liquid center of golf balls - FACT!
