- 1). Listen for a tsunami warning if an earthquake hits your area. Make an evacuation plan. Keep disaster supplies readily available including a first aid kit, emergency food, water, a flashlight, cash and credit cards. Don't watch for a tsunami at the shore. Do not try to surf a tsunami wave because it may be full of debris. Develop an emergency communication plan with friends and family and have an out-of-state relative serve as a point of contact.
- 2). Stay away from bodies of water. Determine if you live in a tsunami evacuation zone. Follow the advice of local law enforcement; a tsunami warning is issued only when a threat exists. Obtain the latest tsunami emergency information from the radio or television and move inland toward higher ground if an evacuation is ordered. Stay away from currents in rivers and streams that lead to the ocean.
- 3). Find shelter. Evacuate your home immediately upon hearing the evacuation warning. Walk to the evacuation site or find a safe place outside the evacuation zone. High concrete, multistory buildings may provide protection if you are unable to move inland. Walk to the third floor or higher. Help your neighbors, the elderly and people who may be injured. Give first aid, if appropriate. Stay away from your home until officials have said it is safe to return.
