  The New Hampshire Seacoast city of Portsmouth was settled in 1623, and was once an important trading port. Downtown Portsmouth contains many historic sites and 19th century buildings, and features shopping, entertainment and numerous restaurants. Hotels in or within walking distance of downtown can be pricey, but bargain lodgings can be found within a five-minute drive.

• The six-story, 130-room Holiday Inn Portsmouth was completely renovated in 2009. There are 56 single-bed rooms, with 74 two-bed rooms, and all include high-speed Internet, cable television and work desks. In-room micro-refrigerators are available, and must be arranged in advance.
  
  On-site amenities at the Holiday Inn include a business center for faxing, copying and computer services, a fitness center, and a restaurant open for breakfast and dinner, with a cocktail lounge open nightly.
