- 1). Meet the FDA standards for pet foods. The FDA has regulations that are similar to human foods. The food must be packaged in sanitary conditions and must meet very specific standards for preservatives, ingredients and other additives. The FDA also has very strict labeling requirements and will often require that foods be labeled honestly and according to the weight order in the food.
- 2). Meet the Association of American Feed Control Official regulations. The AAFCO standards are also federal standards that must be met. These regulations relate to proper labeling of the food and meeting safety standards. Many pet foods will be tested for safety before it can be sent to the market.
- 3). Look at the State regulations. Each state has different pet food regulations. Many states will adopt the AAFCO standard regulations or regulations that are similar, but some states will have different requirements that are often unexpected by pet food distributors. States will often disallow any pet food from selling if it doesn't meet the state standards.
