How do I Build a Garden Planting Cart?

    • 1). Bend the metal pipe into a "U" shape. A pipe bender can be used, but there is no need to purchase or rent it when most hardware stores will do this for you in the store.

    • 2). Cut a plywood board to measure 3-feet square. This will be used for the base of the cart. You will also need two pieces cut from the same plywood that measure 2-by-3 feet. These will be used for the two sidewalls. Another piece needs to be cut to measure 2-by-5 feet. This will be used for the back wall. You may wish to cut a second 2-by-5 piece for the front of the cart although it isn't necessary. Sand all surfaces so there are no splinters in the wood and they are smooth.

    • 3). Lay the 3-by-5 section on a flat surface. Attach six L-brackets on three sides of the surface, each side should have two brackets a piece. Each bracket needs to be flush with the edge. The other end of the bracket will be attached to the walls of the cart.

    • 4). Attach the side walls of the cart to the L- brackets, using the provided screws. This may be easier to complete if you press the side wall against a wall or flat surface, while you are screwing the screws in. You should now have a box with two open sides. This is the cart.

    • 5). Turn the cart upside down with the open end facing you.

    • 6). Attach the pipe handle to the bottom of the cart with a U-bracket. It will need to be installed tightly to hold the pipe in place.

    • 7). Attach the 2-foot pipe to the bottom of the cart with two additional U-brackets.

    • 8). Drill a hole the size of the pin in both ends of the 1/2-inch pipe.

    • 9). Slide the 1/2-inch pipe through the 2-inch pipe. This will create an axle on the cart.

Attach the rod to both of the bike tires with a pin and clip. Be sure that both of the tires are the same size. So the cart will roll properly.

Attach two wooden 1-by-2 to the bottom of the cart by drilling two nails through the base of the cart and into both of the 1-by-2. The size of these will depend on the size of the wheels. After the cart is finished, you can measure the distance between the base of the cart and the ground. Subtract 3 inches to provide a more comfortable pulling experience.

      Paint the cart as desired.
