Signs of a Suicidal Teenager

    The Talk

    • One sign of suicidal tendencies is when teens talk about killing themselves, saying perhaps that they would be better off dead --- even if it is said in a joking manner. This kind of talk is a cry for help and a sign that it is time to enlist professional help, such as therapy.

    The Actions

    • A suicidal teenager may start to give away possessions like CDs, favorite clothes, books and other belongings. Friends or family members who are receiving these items should let adults know that something is going on. It could make a huge difference.

    The Attitude

    • Teens who are thinking about committing suicide often lose interest in activities that they once loved. They also might stop caring about how they look or about matters of hygiene. Their attitude in general will be gloomy and depressed, and they may have no interest in talking to friends or family. They may also possibly begin to engage in risky behaviors, like speeding when driving.

    The Plan

    • When teenagers seriously consider suicide, they will start to make plans on how they are going to do it, maybe collecting drugs or weapons. They might write about their plans in a journal or in some form of suicide letter. Suicidal teens might also begin to say their good-byes to friends and family. Your teen may be in serious danger at this point, and your support is urgently needed.
