Browsing the internet, I often spot products on sale that I have not previously seen in shops locally.
I was looking at an online store the other day and I noticed that they were selling portable camping toilets.
This got me thinking about why people would buy such an item.
This was a somewhat unusual subject and I was reluctant to raise the question with friends - I didn't want to seem too weird! I decided to take the plunge though and asked a couple of friends that I know are camping enthusiasts.
They told me that there are often toilets provided at campsites but that the hygiene standards can be shockingly poor in some cases.
They painted a pretty disgusting picture of the scenario that might be faced after you've stumbled across a muddy field in the middle of the night, desperately seeking the toilet block.
Taking their own toilet with is seen as being a means of avoiding such scenes.
Apparently things aren't quite so simple as they may seem though.
The toilet that I spotted was known as a Biotoi and is evidently quite a recent invention.
It has a folding frame, meaning that it is highly compact.
My friends noted that this was a distinct advantage since space is often at a premium when it comes to packing the car to undertake a camping trip.
Another big selling point of the Biotoi was that it was fully environmentally friendly.
This seemed to me to be highly desirable but is apparently still relatively uncommon.
Apparently many camping toilet products are quite bulky and make use of chemicals.
Such products don't sound too good for the natural environment.
It was becoming clear to me why people might choose to buy a portable camping toilet.
It's a device that clearly would have big advantages in certain situations.
It also seemed to me that it could be used elsewhere too.
Rather than being limited to camping trips, a portable toilet might also be used in other circumstances where toilet facilities might not be available, or simply might not be up to scratch.
My own experiences of music festivals suggested that the Biotoi could come in handy there too.
It's amazing how many questions are thrown up as you make your way around the internet!
