The history of Monopoly tokens can sometimes be as dry as the Australian Nullarbor Desert.
However, the point I am about to make is going to be far more interesting and potentially profitable.
I made real money in business using the principles of Monopoly game rules.
But it was out of those rules that my view of 'Monopoly tokens' took on a whole new exciting meaning.
I 'saw' in the humble Monopoly token a great insight into learning about the power of brand presence in the market place.
Needless to say, I was blown away! Let me explain.
In my last two articles, "Sneak Peek" and "The Board" from my series on 'How I Made Real Money in Business Using Monopoly Game Rules' I explained how the Monopoly board taught me about creating playing fields in business, and how the different color property groups on the board showed me everything I needed to know about unique niche segments in the market.
Continuing from that theme, today I want to take you into the Monopoly token classroom to share a great lesson I had learned on 'value perception' in a marketplace.
You will notice, if you know your Monopoly history (assuming that you had nothing better to do), that from about 1935 to 1937 and on to the early forties Monopoly introduced a new concept of symbolic tokens into their game.
There was the thimble, purse, shoe, lantern, top hat, car, the rocking horse, the battleship and the cannon.
Then in the later years we saw the arrival of Scotty the dog, the wheelbarrow and the horse and rider, as newer tokens.
In keeping with the times Monopoly recently introduced new tokens based on brand icons such as Toyota Prius, McDonald's French Fries, and Starbucks into their 'tokens' stable.
Why would Monopoly link their tokens to such world brands, aside from clever associated marketing? The answer is simple! Toyota, McDonald's, and Starbucks, are in themselves influential brands in the marketplace.
They are, if you like, recognizable 'tokens' (brands) in the playing field of business.
The makers of Monopoly recognize the power of a market identity.
The market itself is always influenced and driven by brand identifies.
We all like to identify with something! I learned this concept by watching tokens on a Monopoly board.
Tokens, like market brands, are powerful identities in themselves.
As a player on the Monopoly board, my token is my icon, my brand presence in the game, you could say, its my identity.
