- 1). Enroll in a security guard training course at a training facility or school that is licensed by the state. Only certified training schools can provide security guard training that satisfies the state licensing authority. Complete the required 40 hours of training to qualify for your Class D security guard license. You do not need to complete all 40 hours before applying for your license, as Chapter 493 of the Florida Statutes states that you can apply after you have completed 24 hours of training, but you must complete the remaining 16 hours of training within 180 days of applying.
- 2). Download the application form from the official Florida Division of Licensing website. The application form contains instructions to help you complete the application and lists other requirements you will need to provide in support of your application. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you will need to provide proof of your right to reside and work in the United States, issued by the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
- 3). Obtain a standard passport photograph to include with your application and have your fingerprints taken at the offices of a law enforcement agency. Make sure you do not sign the fingerprint card until the person who is taking your fingerprints is present and complete all sections on the card in black ink. Be sure to include the address of the law enforcement agency that took the fingerprints on the proper place on the card.
- 4). Complete the application form, but do not sign it. Applications must be signed before a Florida Notary Public. Once your application has been completed, signed and notarized, submit it, along with proof of residency and authorization to work in the United States, if you are not a U.S. citizen, plus your passport photograph and fingerprint card, to the Florida Division of Licensing. You should also include the license fee of $45.00 with your application plus an additional $42.00 fingerprint card processing fee. You may begin security guard duties as soon as you have submitted your application.
