- 1). Verify your eligibility. Income qualifications for Section 8 are set by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In 2009, HUD income ceilings started at $21,900 for a single person and went to $41,250 for an eight person household. The income for your household may not exceed the HUD-set level for the size of your household. You can find the current income restrictions on the HUD website. IHFA may determine you are ineligible for HUD if you have ever been convicted of fraud in a federally funded housing program or convicted of a violent or drug related crime. If you owe IHFA money, your application may also be denied.
- 2). Find your regional IHFA office. There are offices in Twin Falls, Coeur d'Alene, Lewiston and Idaho Falls. If you are unsure which office serves your town, call the main IHFA office on 208-331-4886 for assistance.
- 3). Obtain a Section 8 application from the IFHA office that serves your area. You can download the applications for each office from the IHFA website, the websites of the individual offices or by contacting the appropriate regional office by phone. Reach the Twin Falls office on 208-734-8531, the Coeur d'Alene office on 208-667-3380, the Lewiston office on 208-743-0251 and the Idaho Falls office on 208-522-6002.
- 4). Complete and submit your application. The application requests the names, birthdates, work history, employment history, income and criminal background of everyone in your household. The application submission address depends on the regional office to which you are applying and is listed on the application.
- 5). Request follow-up information from the appropriate regional office. A number of different factors determine how quickly your Section 8 application is evaluated and approved, from the demand for Section 8 in your area to the immediacy of your need -- for instance, if you are currently homeless, your application may be prioritized. You may also be required notify the IHFA regional office of changes in your income or address in writing. It is important to follow the specific rules of the regional office with which you are working.
