- Lemon juice is an old favorite for adding subtle blond to your hair. The acid in lemon is very drying, however, so don't apply the juice directly to hair. Try mixing the juice of a lemon with your conditioner, massaging onto hair, and sitting in the sun for an hour. The sunlight helps the lemon juice to lighten your hair, and the conditioner keeps you from getting split ends or frizz. Or, try mixing the juice of a lemon with a gallon of water, and rinsing your hair with the mixture every time you shower. This will result in a gradual lightening of the hair.
- Honey is a natural source of hydrogen peroxide, which makes it a great lightener for hair. Put a tablespoon of honey in a cup of water, and let the hydrogen peroxide develop by leaving the mixture for 30 minutes. Coat hair with the liquid. Leave it on for at least 20 minutes; sitting in the sun will help it to work faster.
- Chamomile flowers are known for their hair-brightening effects. You can find them at health food stores (regular chamomile tea may be mixed with other herbs, and the result will be less noticeable). Boil a cup of the flowers in two cups of water for 30 minutes, and then let it cool. Rinse hair daily with this concoction.
- Boiling rhubarb roots in water creates a warm-toned lightening rinse for hair. After boiling (try 3/4 oz. roots to 4 cups water), remove the roots, and pour the liquid through your hair several times (use a bowl to catch the rinse as your pour it through, then reuse it).
