Kalabash a work of fiction by Zachariah Mappilassery a widely travelled Malayalee with his roots in Mulakuzha of Chenganur in Alapuzha district would soon hit book stands in the UK. This voluminous work running to 620 pages took 7 years to complete and is being published and promoted by Authorhouse of UK on September 15th.
The novel has an international backdrop with Indian, African and German characters taking central stage and is presented as a nostalgic narrative by a centurion who has reached great heights in society. The grand old man shares the story of his life with a young lady, opening up thoughts that had remained locked in the innermost part of his heart, he describes the circumstances that led him to kill his wife and how he could not marry the lady to whom he was engaged and recalls the role of six women who played a key role in charting his destiny. The narrative takes the reader through several twists and turns and ends on a note that would leave most readers spellbound.
Although a work of fiction, Kalabasham has been influenced by three real women who left a deep impact on the author's mindset, his mother, wife and fiance whom he could not marry due to circumstances. The author's strong belief in women being the driving force and champions of society is manifested clearly in the narrative.
Zachariah Mappilassery is not a new man to writing, his articles have appeared regularly in Manorama, Manorajyam and other publications. Kalabash is his second novel, the first one unfortunately did not see the light of day, having been lost at the publisher's premises. A Post Graduate from the University of Jabalpur he worked in teaching assignments in Uganda under the Idi Amin regime from where he moved to Nigeria.
