- 1). Place a wok with at least 2 inches of water on the stove and heat until boiling.
- 2). Open the bamboo steamer basket and line the bottom of each level with parchment paper or lettuce, which will not impart flavor to the food. A thin layer of either material allows the steam to pass through and cook the food.
- 3). Cut your food and place in one level of the bamboo steamer. Foods that lend themselves to steaming include vegetables, meat, tamales and fish. Separate different types of food into the different compartments of the steamer to prevent the various flavors from mixing.
- 4). Close the lid on the steamer and place it over the boiling water in the wok. Steam approximately eight minutes or until the food has cooked to a desired consistency. If steaming meat or fish, cut open one piece to ensure that the food has cooked through before removing the remainder from the steamer.
- 5). Lift the steamer off the wok using a potholder. Use a fork or tongs to lift food out of the steamer, as it will be very hot.
- 6). Rinse the bamboo trays with warm soapy water and rinse well. Let air dry thoroughly before storing.
