What If?

I hate New Years resolutions.
In my opinion, if you need to wait until New Years to decide to make changes in your life, you won't be motivated enough to follow them through to fruition.
Seriously.
How many years in a row do we need to say, "This year I will take better care of my health and exercise more"? I am on at least year #5.
So instead of making New Years resolutions, I am going to ask myself and the rest of the world, "What If?" - What if I decided to smile more often at that person in the parking lot who I don't even know? - What if I decided that the quality of the relationships I have with my clients and customers is more important than the bottom line? - What if I decided to leave for work in the morning just 10 minutes earlier so that I don't have to be in a rush? That would give me time to let the woman in the car next to me in the line-up for the bridge.
That would give me time to get to work a little earlier so that I could get home a little earlier in time to spend more time with my wife and kids.
It would give me more time as I drive past the amazing view of the local mountains in the early morning to pull over, get out of my car and breathe it all in.
All because I chose to leave 10 minutes early.
Breathe - What if I decided to pray more? - What if I decided to talk less and listen more? - What if I decided that Fear was no longer going to be the voice in my head? The adage "fake it 'till you make it" may actually mean something.
- What if I decided to stand up more for those poor customer service people behind the counter who aren't the ones who set the price of that burger someone just ordered who thinks the price is outrageous and feel they have the right to blame the poor pimple faced-kid? Breathe again - What if I asked "How are you doing?" because I really wanted to know rather than as a substitute for "Hello"? - What if I decided to meditate more often? - What if I listened to more music intended to inspire rather than music intended to sell sex, drugs, and degrade women? - What if I said "No" more often instead of saying "Yes" to every request sent my way? Breathe one more time.
This world is in your hands.
You have the power to change your world.
Never let anybody stand in your way or tell you you can't do something because those roadblocks are not meant to keep you out: they are meant to separate those who want it from those who don't.
You can do it.
I promise.
Take care and have a safe 2010.
