How to Pack a Move-IN Box

    • 1). Make a list of phone numbers for the utility companies; the phone number of the moving company (if you're using one); the phone number for your old doctor and dentist; and phone numbers for your relatives and/or friends who live close to your new home. In a manila envelope, put a map of your new hometown, an extra car key, an extra house key, a couple of stamped envelopes, a small notepad and a pen. Stand the manila envelope along one side of the box so you can see it as the box is opened.

    • 2). Collect the things you'll need the minute you unlock the door of your new home. Put a spray can of disinfectant and a flashlight with fresh batteries on top of everything else in the box. Put soap, a towel and a washcloth on top, too, as well as toilet paper and a box of tissues.

    • 3). Put paper plates, plastic cups and plastic spoons and knives in the box, along with a roll of paper towels and a can opener. Choose some non-sticky, non-greasy snacks and put them in, too. Add a box of trash bags.

    • 4). Get small finishing nails, a hammer, a flathead screwdriver, a Phillips-head screwdriver, pliers, a small wrench, several sizes of screws, scissors and duct tape, and put all of these into the shoebox. Write "TOOLS" on the outside of the shoebox with a marker. Put the filled shoebox into the big box.

    • 5). Put a small bottle of contact lens liquid in the box for anyone who wears them, and a couple of new toothbrushes and toothpaste. If anyone in the family has a hearing aid or wears glasses, put a new hearing aid battery in the box, as well as one of those tiny eyeglass repair kits. Put things for your pet's immediate needs in the box: its water bowl, a can of food, a food bowl, its leash and/or harness, and its records from the veterinarian, especially proof of its rabies and other shots.
