Sciatica is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression or irritation of one of five spinal nerve roots that give rise to each sciatic nerve or by compression or irritation of the left or right or both sciatic nerves.
It is a common problem in today's hectic world, affecting both the common hardworking laborers as well as people who have to sit or stand for long time, and obese, heavy people.
The causes maybe some accidents or a fall from heights, jerky riding and other factors that put too much pressure on the back.
Initially, the pain might be less and ignored.
As the condition worsens, even during a routine walk or after long hours of work the patient might get pain or tingling sensation in the back or legs.
If still ignored there might be severe disc bulge or even rupture, causing severe, excruciating pain and the patient cannot even move about even for his routine activities and at last becomes bedridden.
At this stage, the patient will have to resort to surgery to get on his/ her feet again.
If brought at the initial stages, Ayurveda can help you out.
In Ayurveda, there are many medicines both internally and externally that help to reduce the compression as well as irritation of the nerves.
Internal medicines help to correct digestion problems like constipation, gas trouble, gastritis which otherwise can increase the pain.
Certain laxatives are given which help to reduce the interstitial fluid collected around areas of disc bulge, thereby reducing nerve irritation.
Other medicines that help to strengthen the nerves, disc, and muscles are also given.
The treatments include applying cloth bag (bundles containing medicines), massage, pouring of medicated liquid, bandages etc...
and the special therapies for example vasti (special Ayurvedic enema).
This treatment help to reduce swellings around the area of disc bulge, reduce muscle spasm, strengthen the muscles, rehydrates the discs and thereby reduces compression and irritation of the nerves in case of degeneration.
It also relieves over hydration from the bulged intervertebral discs.
These treatments improve the microcirculation to enhance the healing at the areas of non inflammatory insults.
These treatments if done under proper medical guidance, will not only help you to recover from sciatica, but also prevent future occurrences.
The usual pattern of treatment includes twenty one days of continuous application of procedure therapies followed by internal medication for two months.
This has to be repeated in every year at least for three consecutive times.
