Removal of Kidney Stones - The Painful Alternatives

Kidney stones are treated based on their current positions and sizes.
In other cases, kidney stones that are stuck in the ureter for more than 30 days should be scheduled for removal.
Moving stones on the other hand can be passed out of the system normally through increase of liquid intakes and taking diuretics.
Diuretics by the way are substances that promote frequent urination.
Thus, kidney stone removal can be done through frequent urination since a regular flow of urine can carry out the stones.
On the other hand, there are kidney stone removal methods that utilize technological instruments.
They are of course, treatments of last resort since removal methods through natural remedies is no longer possible.
Below are some of these kidney stone removal methods: Uteroscopy - A method of removal performed with the use of tubes and instruments inserted up into the ureters.
A uteroscope is inserted up the bladder and into the affected ureter then the stone is taken with a basket-like attachment.
This can be quite painful hence, regional or general anesthesia is applied.
Lithotripsy - This is done for those patients that have stones that are in the kidney or in the upper ureter.
In this procedure, a probe is made to enter into the bladder and up the ureter.
The instrument will then break the stone into smaller pieces.
After breaking, the stones are induced to pass through the urinary system naturally since they are already broken into smaller grains.
Ultrasonic Lithotripsy - This is almost the same with lithotripsy but the device used is different.
It uses an ultrasound probe that breaks the stone up with sound waves.
Still, the stones are made to pass on their own after being broken up.
Electrohydraulic lithotripsy - This is a variation of the lithotripsy method where the only difference is that the device for breaking the stones is different.
It uses shock waves generated by electricity, after which the stones may then be removed or made to pass on their own.
The advantage of this procedure is that it can remove stones from anywhere in the urinary tract.
Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy -This requires no intrusive probes or surgical incisions.
Instead, shockwaves generated by a machine are used and focused on the stones.
The patient's lower body is submersed or a liquid filled bag is placed over the area where the sound should be focused.
It is very effective and can break the stones into fine granules.
Though very effective, it cannot be used on pregnant women or stones larger than 1 inch.
Percutaneous Nephrostolithotomy - This is a method where a needle guides a catheter to the nearest route reaching the affected area inside the patient.
Then the catheters break up and remove the stones from inside the kidney.
It needs sedation and local anesthesia because a person will experience a lot of pain if done if the patient is conscious.
Open surgery - Although this method is rarely done nowadays.
The patient is opened up through an incision in the back and the stones are removed from the kidney through incisions on the kidney.
Quite obviously, kidney stone removal by undergoing the above methods can be very expensive and painful.
It is up to a person to avoid the formation of kidney stones by maintaining a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, especially if one is susceptible to this kind of disease.
