Potting shed basics
A potting shed is not necessarily complicated to create. It can be an extremely simple structure. At minimum it should hold your gardening supplies and tools. Your potting shed doesn't really even have to be big enough for you to enter it.
If you do plan on your shed being big enough to enter, my advice is to install a window as natural light will make the space more pleasant. Sunlight is a must have if you plan on doing your potting inside the shed.
Shelves for storing pots, seeds, and soil will be useful. Also, consider having a book shelf for any magazines, growing guides, and gardening books.
Of course, a workbench should be in your plans. When you build your own potting shed you can determine how tall you want your bench to be. They are often around thirty-four inches.
Bells and whistles
One of the wonderful things about gardening is being outside. You can extend your shed's roof to make an overhang and install a potting bench beneath it. This will make a pleasant place to use as small sheds can get quite hot in the summer.
Installing a pegboard over your potting bench and inside the shed will keep all those loose small tools organized. Also plan a wall for hanging your larger tools. It is neither safe nor efficient to lean them all in a corner.
Different plants like different soils. You will want to have perlite, vermiculite, sand, and potting soil available. Fertilizer is the same. Having an area designed to store these is a good idea. I recommend using Rubbermaid containers rather than hanging on to the original bags. Purchase matching stacking containers to save space.
Consider having running water at your potting shed. A hose close by will give you a good place to wash off tools before putting them back, not to mention watering-in newly planted seedlings.
Although not necessary, running electricity to your potting shed is something to think about. You may want to keep a small refrigerator for long term bulb storage and for cold drinks! Having light available for those after dark planting projects is useful as well.
Another wonderful idea is a small cold frame against the sunniest side of your potting shed. Use some old windows as the lid or you could buy some pains of glass. This will help you jump start your growing season.
