Fertilizer for Banana Plants

    Fertilization for Ornamental Use

    • Banana plants may be grown for ornamental use in interior spaces or in the landscape. Frequent organic fertilizing is necessary for optimum health. Well-composted organic material, including the remains of other bananas, is productive for the ornamental plant.

    Fertilization for Edible Bananas

    • If the banana plant is grown for fruit production, special attention should be paid to the inclusion of potassium in fertilization, before and during fruit production. Potassium content in purchased fertilizer is indicated in the fertilizer analysis on the bag, the last number of the three digit series. Natural fertilizers such as fish emulsion and worm castings may be applied often.

    Reduce Nitrogen Fertilizer

    • When the banana has started flowering, nitrogen fertilizer should be reduced. As with many plants, too much nitrogen at this stage may result in heavy foliage growth and little fruit production. Avoid chemical fertilizers if possible; these may cause the fruit to blacken.
