The Key Skills of an Architect

Becoming an architect is a very time intensive endeavour and those who commit to architecture as a career choice are committed to a lot of study time and work experience before they can be considered knowledgeable and reputable.

Although the education process is intensive there are also other traits that can help to make a good architect, personal traits that can really make an architect stand out from the crowd.

In this article I hope to highlight some of the key traits that can help to make a good architect great.

An inquisitive nature
Project requirements that are given to an architect quite often nowhere near as detailed as they will need to be and many potential issues would not have been thought out in advance. Because of this an architect with an inquisitive nature will be able to quickly and easily ask the right questions to gain a full understanding of the project that they have been presented with. By comparison, an architect who does not have such an inquisitive nature might not think to ask all of the relevant questions at the beginning and therefore key goals and requirements may go unaddressed.

Communication
Just like with many other industries communication can be the key to a successful project and to successful project management. An architect will need to be able to communicate openly with you and others who are relevant to the project so that everyone is clear on what is expected and the current state of affairs.

Creativity
Some of the projects that an architect will be presented with will be based on some serious out-of-the-box thinking and as such the architect needs to also be able to think out-of-the-box in a creative way.
Even the projects that seemed to be quite straightforward in the beginning can often require a high level of creativity in order to make them work. An architect who is not naturally creative can often struggle to find solutions whereas a creative colleague might not have these issues.

Strong mathematical skills
Architecture, much like many other areas of the construction industry, can rely heavily on numbers. If an architect does not have these strong mathematical skills then they could be prone to making unnecessary errors that could affect the entire project.

An eye for detail
In any architectural project the larger aspects will often gain a great deal of attention initially due to their sheer size and also due to the fact they are the most visible, however, it is the numerous small details that can really make or break a project and it is these details that the architect needs to remain on top of at all times.
The large projects that an architect generally undertakes will often be deemed successful or unsuccessful based on the smaller details that will often go unnoticed.

The ability to work under pressure
The pressures placed upon an architect will often be immense, obviously there is a pressure to get things right however architects can often be placed under huge time and budget constraints that they need to meet and therefore being able to deal with these pressures is very important.

Speaking with different architects will provide a much larger list of key skills that is required within their industry however most, if not all, will agree with the above.
