When people think about visiting Florida, they often think of visiting the beaches and theme parks that this state is well known for.
There is a place, however, where people can enjoy the peace and serenity of the Florida wildlife without having to pay to see it with a crowd of people.
There are many undiscovered parts of Florida and St.
George Island is one of them.
St.
George Island State Park boasts a wildlife that includes plants and animals.
Some of the natural beauty that is seen on St.
George Island includes tidal marsh, freshwater ponds and streams, dunes and many different pine communities.
Some of the creatures that you can see include those that are endangered species but are protected on the island.
Sea turtles, indigo snakes, bald eagles and gopher tortoises are all part of the sanctuary on the island.
St.
Vincent Wildlife Refuge is located off of St.
George Island.
There is fishing allowed in the refuge but only in the refuge lakes.
Surf fishing is also allowed all year round, but not where any birds are located.
Before fishing in the refuge, a person must check to see if this is nesting season for the bald eagles, at which time fishing is not allowed.
There is also hunting allowed in the refuge for white tailed deer, feral pig and sambar deer.
Those who want to hunt in the refuge must have a valid hunting license.
St.
George Island is one of the most unique parts of Florida because it is a sparsely occupied island that is off of the coast of the Florida Panhandle and has not been open to the public until 1980.
Unlike other parts of Florida that feature crowded beaches and humid weather, St.
George Island features a hot but dry climate and no crowds.
There are no high rises on the island permitted and only 1000 permanent residents live on the island that also features white sand beaches, oyster bars and shopping.
There are rental properties available for those who want to stay on the island as well as camping in the refuge.
There is also a motel on the island for those who are seeking a short term stay at St.
George.
Those who want to enjoy the warm, sunny weather of Florida but also enjoy nature will find St.
George Island and the St.
Vincent Wildlife Refuge to be the ideal respite from the hectic nature of every day life.
