- 1). Make the basic frame for the box. Set the 2-by-8-inch boards on edge. Nail them in place, forming a rectangle. Put the shorter boards across the ends of the longer boards. This formation will make the interior of the frame approximately 8 feet and 1 inch long by 4 feet and 1 inch wide.
- 2). Put the frame on a solid, even surface in full sun. Make sure the area is clear of debris that could damage the liner of the hydroponic box. If you set up your garden there, take extra care to remove all rocks or other objects, as the water makes the box quite heavy.
- 3). Lay the plastic sheet in the box. Arrange it so that the plastic reaches over the top on all sides. Add water to the box, to weight down the plastic and make it fit smoothly in the frame.
- 4). Nail furring strips along the top of the frame, all the way around. Use enough nails to hold the plastic securely. Use the carpet knife to trim the excess plastic from the outside of the box.
- 5). Cut small holes in the Styrofoam sheet with the carpet knife. Make them just big enough to hold net pots. Which size pots you choose depends on what you want to grow. The frame is now ready for the hydroponic solution and plants.
