Pain Characteristics

• Sharp or burning pain or a dull ache are common signs of a pinched nerve. When the nerve is in the spinal cord, coughing or sneezing can worsen the pain. Painful muscle spasms in the back can accompany pinched nerves.
  
  

Radiating Pain

• Pain commonly radiates outward from the pinched nerve. Pinched nerves in the lower back can cause pain to radiate down the leg, sometimes all the way to the foot. Pinched nerves in the neck can cause pain to radiate through the shoulders and even into the hands.
  
  

Weakness

• Weakness in the affected area also can occur. For instance, this is common in carpal tunnel syndrome.
  
  

Tingling

• Other common signs of a pinched nerve include sensations of tingling, such as a hand or foot that feels like it has "fallen asleep."
  
  

Considerations

• Pinched nerve signs and symptoms may become worse when the individual is sleeping and cause him to wake up.
