On a good day at work, this place is buzzing with activity. Shouts of simultaneous joy and anguish by people on the street looking at a large screen precariously and smartly placed by a prominent finance media channel on this building. Every one, right from information gobbling analysts to tobacco chewing street food vendors, has an opinion or two for anyone who cares to listen. No, this isn't cricket that we're talking about. Nor is this any other sport, but the adrenalin and the excitement isn't any less, if not more. This is the home of all things capital market, in India. It is our very own Wall Street. It is Dalal Street, or on days the market crashes, it is, The Laal Street (Red).
It is the world's tenth largest stock exchange, in terms of market capitalization and Asia's oldest stock exchange which was established in 1875. It is interesting to note that during 1850s, broker meetings were conducted under banyan trees! This place was in front of the Town Hall which was exactly opposite where Horniman Circle is situated today. With an increase in the number of brokers there was always a need to shift to a permanent place. Hence, in 1874 a place was found for traders to come together which was aptly called Dalal Street. It has held the world's attention since the last two decades since measures of liberalization were undertaken by India.
Over time, there have been various changes to its format and new products have continuously been added for trading and investing in the Indian stock market. While it doesn't have the penetration or maturity of peers like the Canary Wharf, Raffles City or The Wall Street, our very own Dalal Street has managed to hold on its own. An installation of the raging bull, a la Wall Street, in 2008 completed its look.
A comprehensive set of rules and regulations were formulated much before actual legislations were enacted. Post-independence, BSE's best practices were adopted by 23 other stock exchanges. In current times, it has advanced security systems and around 85 personnel guarding the building along with CCTV cameras and visitors' entry systems. It is today India's biggest bourse with respect to number of listed companies and market capitalization.
The advent of technology has added a lot of transparency to the market. Online trading systems, the Dematerialized (DEMAT) format of trading and live share market updates on various media platforms and the internet have sown all the seeds for our Dalal Street to take over the giants in the Wall Street.
