- A produce store owner starts his workday by opening the store and walking through, making sure there are no messes left from the night before (if someone other than him closed the store). Once he is satisfied that the store is presentable, he will set up the cashier's drawers. If it is a small produce establishment and he has one employee working as a cashier, he will set up one cash drawer. If there are many employees, he will set up a cash drawer for each employee.
- The produce store owner will then check all inventory, marking down any produce that must be ordered for the next day. If the store has a point of sale (POS) register, he will pull the inventory reports off the register and order based on the reorder level shown in the report. If not, the produce store owner may make a cursory look at his stock and order based on the number of boxes he sees.
- At least once a week, the produce store owner will take an actual physical count of his inventory. At this time, he adjusts any order levels and orders inventory based on the hard count. If he uses a POS, he will be sure the reorder levels are correct in the POS reports. During inventory, the produce store owner will also check for produce that is starting to go bad, or produce that has reached its "sell by" date. He will either throw out the produce or return it to the distributor (depending on his contract with the distributor).
During the day, if the store gets busy, the produce store owner may work one of the registers so customers don't have to wait in a long line. He also deals with customer complaints, if any. - The produce store owner also has administrative duties. Most administrative duties are not completed every day, but they must be completed at least weekly. He must draw employee payroll, update employee records and benefits and take deposits to the bank. He will also prepare sales tax records and submit collected sales tax to the state department of revenue. Weekly or monthly, depending on the way he runs his business, he will run all financial reports and do his accounting--or, if he employs an accountant, he will send this information to the accountant.
