Before embarking on a fundraising campaign a synagogue must ask themselves honestly the following crucial questions to ensure a successful campaign.
1.
How much is to be raised? Is there a consensus for a strong and unique "case" of support we can make in the minds and hearts of our members? How much does our synagogue want to raise? Is this a feasible figure? Was this determined by actual need? How is the money to be allocated? Over how long a period of time? 2.
By Whom? The role of the Synagogue Board: Is the Board behind this effort in terms of making meaningful personal gifts and asking others to give? Who will serve as the core fund-raising committee and devote the time? Can we activate volunteer campaign workers to join the effort? 3.
From Whom? Can we identify the primary and secondary groups of potential donor: Who represents the top 10 gifts in the membership? The next 25? How extensive should the grass-roots efforts be? 4.
What fund-raising strategies should we employ: Face-to-face solicitations Parlor-style meetings Synagogue special events Telethons 5.
With What? What are the resources available in the synagogue for launching the campaign: volunteers, staff, initial funding.
6.
Why Not? What are the potential problems and obstacles to conducting a successful campaign for the synagogue in this community, at this time? 7.
WHEN? What is the timetable for scheduling the campaign When is the campaign to be concluded...
and how? After careful evaluation of each question by the synagogue leadership and answering thoughtfully and honestly it will set forth a sound decision as to whether or not they will move ahead in their fundraising efforts.
