- 1). Do a thorough background check before hiring anyone to watch your children. Background checks typically include Social Security check, list of previous addresses and criminal records. There are several nanny websites such as 4nannies.com, Enannysource.com and Nannybackgroundcheck.com that will check your nanny for a fee. Once the background check is completed you can give a copy to your nanny so she can have it for future positions.
- 2). Ask the nanny to keep a daily log of what she did with our children that day. For babies this can include feeding times, nap times and play times. For older children have her write down what they ate that day, what activities that did, how much television they watched and any accidents they had.
- 3). Install a nanny cam. This is the most you can do to monitor your nanny apart from being there yourself. A nanny cam is a small hidden camera inside a toy or object that records the activities in a room. Some you have to watch later and others you can watch online in live stream. Many nannies feel this is intrusive and should only be used if you suspect bad behavior on the nanny's part. Several states require by law that you tell the nanny if you installed a nanny cam, so check to see what your state requires.
