How to Open a Lock Box With a Lost Combination

    Pick the Lock

    • 1). Bend two safety pins to try picking the lock yourself. (This method may not work for all lock boxes or types of locks. It is best for those with pin tumlbers or lever locks.) Unbend the first paper clip into a pick by straightening it out completely.

    • 2). Open up the second paper clip into an L shape.

    • 3). Insert the second, L-shaped paper clip into the bottom of the keyhole and push it in. Then, insert the first, straightened paper clip into the top of the keyhole. You should be able to feel the pins or levers in the lock push up as you insert the straightened paper clip.

    • 4). Pull the straight paper clip out, raking it upward against the pins. At the same time, apply slight tension to the end of the L-shaped paper clip. When the combination of tension applied to each paper clip is right, the lock should open. You may need to try this a few times before it works.

If you cannot open the lock box this way, try another method below.

    • 5). Reset your combination.

    Manufacturer Reset

    • 1). Contact the manufacturer of your lock box. They may be able to assist you if you have lost your combination. Different manufacturers have different policies, but the following steps commonly apply.

    • 2). Print out any necessary forms for a lost combination. Combination locks from certain brands require this step before they send the combination for locks that have a serial number. Many manufacturers will not send the combination in response to telephone, fax or email requests due to security issues. Check the manufacturer's website for specific policies and information.

    • 3). Have the form authorized by a Notary Public to prove you are the owner of the lock.

    • 4). Photocopy the serial number on the lock box.

    • 5). Mail the necessary forms and documentation to the manufacturer, and you should receive the combination within several weeks.

    Hire a locksmith

    • 1). Find a reputable, professional locksmith to open the lock box for you. In some cases, the manufacturer of the lock box may be able to send a locksmith who will be able to open the lock. Before you hire any locksmith, however, ensure the company is reputable.

    • 2). Ask for the locksmith's identification and insurance information. If you are entrusting them to pick your lock, ensure they are a professional, or you risk compromising the security of your lock box.

    • 3). Reset your combination after the locksmith forces the lock open.
